When U.S. Marine Corps veteran Derek LeMay of Orlando wanted to leverage his skills in Information Technology (IT), he found a perfect fit with FAPSC member school New Horizons Computer Learning Centers at a campus in Orlando.
LeMay, a GI Bill student, credits New Horizons with helping train him as an A+ Certified Technician, Network+ Certified and Security+ Professional, which ultimately helped him become a Storage Support Technician for his employer, NetApp, a national tech company that ranked No. 3 among the World’s Best Multinational Workplaces by the Great Place to Work Institute.
His military experience laid the foundation for his present career path. “Before New Horizons, I was a systems administrator in the Marine Corps for five years. After my enlistment, I started attending Valencia College working towards my associate’s degree but then decided to enroll in New Horizons instead,” he said.
Among the aspects of the training at New Horizons that appealed to LeMay included the accelerated track and the hands-on learning experience. In addition, he said the labs are first-rate and the instructors are very professional.
“Each student has their own workstation and equipment – the additional resources that New Horizons provides allows students to study in a manner that best suits their learning style,” he added.
He says New Horizons plugged him in to a variety of IT career opportunities and even assisted with resume writing skill, a support network for job placement that he found invaluable.
